Drying Is Moving Water, Not Removing It
A wet wall does not stop being wet because air is blowing at it. What happens is that the moisture moves from the material into the air, and unless something takes it out of the air it simply lands somewhere else in the house. That is the whole reason air movers and dehumidifiers are used together.
Run fans alone and you get a humid house and a wall that is still wet at the bottom. Run a dehumidifier alone in a closed room and it dries the air while the material gives its moisture up far too slowly.
What Air Movers Do
Air movers are aimed low and along surfaces rather than straight at them, at an angle that keeps a sheet of fast-moving air traveling across the floor and up the wall. That moving air strips away the thin damp layer sitting against the material so the moisture inside can keep coming out.
Their placement is deliberate. Spacing, angle and the number of units are set from the size of the wet area, and they get moved as readings change. A machine sitting in a doorway pointing at nothing is not doing any work.
What Dehumidifiers Do
A dehumidifier pulls the humid air in, condenses the moisture out of it and sends drier air back into the room, with the water going to a drain or a tank. Refrigerant units are the common choice; desiccant units use a material that adsorbs moisture and are chosen when the air has to be pushed much drier than usual.
The size and number of units come from the volume of the space and how wet the materials are. This is also why the room needs to stay closed: dehumidifying the neighborhood through an open window is not a plan.
Specialty Equipment for Trapped Water
Water gets into places open air cannot reach. Small mats connected to a vacuum system can pull water up through the top layer of a hardwood floor. Hoses that inject air into a wall cavity through small holes at the base can dry the inside of a wall without removing the drywall.
Under cabinets, behind a tub surround and inside a stair box are the usual trouble spots. If those cannot be reached, opening a small area and drying it properly beats leaving it and hoping.
The Readings Are the Point
Before equipment goes in, moisture content is recorded in the affected materials and in a matching dry area of the same building. That second number is the target. Readings are taken again each day, and the pattern tells the story: steady progress, or a wall that has stopped moving.
When a reading stalls, something is wrong: wet insulation in the cavity, water under a floor covering, or a source that has not actually been fixed. That is a reason to investigate, not a reason to leave the machines running another day.
Living With It
The equipment is loud and the rooms get warm, because air movers put heat into the space. Most people stay in the house through a clean-water job. What matters is that the machines keep running: switching them off overnight lets moisture go straight back into the material you just pulled it out of.
If the noise or the placement is a real problem, say so and ask the crew to rework it. What you should not do is quietly unplug anything.
Why Drying Takes Longer in Tampa
Outdoor air here is humid most of the year, so it offers no help at all. Opening the windows in August makes a wet house wetter.
